Bracoden Primary School
Bracoden Primary School is located Gardenstown, a coastal village in Aberdeenshire. Historically fishing was the main economic activity but in more recent years tourism has played just as an important role in the local economy.
The school is equipped with a small forestry playground where their 'forest class' takes place each week. Here the students learn about trees, carbon sequestration and build insect hotels. Alongside this there is an allotment and small greenhouse made of old plastic bottles.
In the future the school would like to buy a polytunnel to expand its crop season. The school has been rewarded for its efforts with the Woodland Trust Award for its forest practises. These include the planting of a small wood and trees around the edge of the school field.
During the visit to the school in May 2022, a presentation of Food Systems on a Changing Climate was given to students. In this interactive session the students were very involved and very participative. They showed understanding of the importance of the harbour for the local community. From converstations they also displayed how climate change could impact the harbour/fishing industry and consequently the livlihoods of local fishermen.
